Sam Mountain


From the center of Long Xuyen City, An Giang traveling about 60km to the west along Highway 91 to Chau Doc town, you can see a mountain where many people know and want to go to, Mount Sam.

Sam Mountain in Chau Doc is also known as Vinh Te Son or Lanh Son Mountain. The mountain is 284m high and covers an area of 280ha. At this mountain, people built the Sam Mountain Resort which is attracted not only by the scenery but also by many architectural and cultural relics that are deeply rooted in the spirit of An Giang people and the Southwest region.

The Sam mountain has a strategic military position, a fortress protecting Chau Doc town, a natural dike preventing flood season.

The Sam mountain resort has asphalt road about 5km long winding on the mountainside. When staying in the Sam mountain you can run to the top, through many trails, many up and down roads. Alongside the road are the lines of flowers, embellishing the rosy color of the antigonon flowers. At the top of Sam mountain, there is still a small dark blue sedimentary stone pedestal, on which the statue of Ba Chua Mount Sam located, before being taken to the shrine. Moreover, there is also a fort built in the French colonial period, and a small shrine to worship Zhang Jima (1866-1929) who was a Confucianist of the Duy Tan movement.

The legend about the Sam Mountain


According to folk legends, Sam Mountain is so much worshiped that many Buddhist temples have been erected here for nearly two centuries. There are up to 200 temples, pagodas, altar, shrines are scattered at the foot of mountains, slopes and even at the top. The most famous destination on the mountain are Ba Chua Xu Temple, Tay An Pagoda, Thoai Ngoc Hau Tomb, Phuoc Dien Pagoda (also known as Hang Pagoda) has been recognized as a national monument. Relic of Ba Chua Temple of Mount Sam

Ba Chua Xu Temple is a famous and important monument (historical, architectural and spiritual) of the area. Particularly for people in the southwestern region, Ba Chua Xu has merit to help her children live peacefully. Every year, from April lunar until the beginning of June, there are many pilgrims from many places to visit, worship and pray to make the holiday season bustling and crowded in the tourist area of the Sam Mountain.

Thoai Ngoc Mountain Tomb of Mount Sam

Thoai Ngoc Hau Tomb is a typical architectural intact in the Sam Mountain monument complex. It is built from the Nguyen Dynasty and remained to this day. This is a monumental work, having the meaning of culture, history, and is recognized as a National monument. Inside the tomb is decorated very sophisticated and meticulous. The mausoleum is both a tomb and Thoai Ngoc Hau altar – a Nguyen dynasty mandarin was sent by the court to clear and guard the An Giang land.

Tay An pagoda in Sam Mountain

Located in the historical relic of Mount Sam, Tay An Pagoda is the architectural combination of Indian and Vietnamese art style and the first ethnic architecture in Vietnam. The pagoda has been classified as a national architectural art. Behind the pagoda is the Sam Mountain, which looks like a prominent bronze statue.

Sam Mountain Cave Pagoda

Hang Pagoda also is known as Phuoc Dien Pagoda, lying quietly on the slopes of Sam Mountain. From the foot of the mountain to the Hang pagoda is the high stairs, the wall is one side, the other is the green forest. Standing on the pagoda, you can see the high mountains, the vast fields, the far away is the green slash cassava. Within the Hang pagoda, there are many lively suburbs, from the corner of the cave or the niche, windows are decorated with green trees or the Buddha statues.
